Sensors are an important part of any smart home system. They are designed to receive signals or data from remotes or other types of equipment. You can build your own smart home sensor that can help you to automate your living quarters without paying a lot of money. The following information will show you how to build a smart home sensor that is practical and functional.

 

Why would need to build your own smart home sensor?

 

Smart home sensors perform a wide variety of functions. Many are made to perform one type of service. There are some sensors that can perform a variety of different tasks. Specifically, you can use a smart home sensor to detect temperature and motion. These apparatuses are also useful for controlling a home’s noise levels. It can even be integrated into a residential security system. These are some of the basic reasons for having a smart home sensor.

Parts and Tools Needed to make your Sensor

 

The tools you will need for making your own sensor include a soldering iron, pliers and a wire cutter. The parts you will need will be specifically listed. You must purchase these parts according to instructions, otherwise, your sensor unit might not work right. They include:

 

Arduino Pro Mini 328 – 3.3V/8 MHz

PIR motion sensor (SEN-08630)Hookup wire (PRT-08022)

Two 1K resistors

Humidity and temperature sensor

5V Step-Up Breakout – NCP1402

LiPo Charger Basic – Micro-USB

Ambient Light Sensor Breakout – TEMT6000

MEMS Microphone Breakout – INMP401

Micro OLED Breakout

Polymer Lithium-Ion Battery – 1,000 mAh

Pi Tin for the Raspberry Pi – White

 

Once you gathered your parts, you can then begin to work on your project. The following steps listed below will show you how to complete this process.

 

Step 1

Program the Arduino. You can do this by following manufacturer instructions.

 

Step 2

Prepare your PIR Motion Sensor. The circuit board should be made ready by taking off the black rectangular three-pad chip. You will then need to solder a piece of wire between pads 1 and 3. You will be able to identify them on the board once you see it.

 

Step 3

Solder more wire. You will have to solder a 1K resistor wire between pin 2. This pin is located between the humidity and temperature sensor on the circuit board.

 

Step 4

Continuing Soldering. You will then need to solder the humidity and temperature sensor’s power pin. This solder will connect to a 5V pin located on the 5V step-up breakout. Once again, when you see the circuit board, you will be able to locate these positions.

 

Step 5

Connect Step-Up Breakout to the Output. You will then be required to connect the 3.7V pin. It is located on the 5V step-up breakout. Place this to the output of the LiPo charger.

 

Step 6

Connect the 1K resistor. The 1K resistor should be attached between the AL pin of the PIR motion sensor and the 3.3V pin. This can be found on the Arduino.

 

Step 7

Solder remaining power pins. At this point, you should connect the left-over power pins on the Arduino unit. Connect them to the micro OLED, MEMS microphone and 3.3V pin. Once these areas are connected the unit will be ready with its basic sensing functions.

 

Step 8

Plug up the charger. Now, plug up your charger you purchased with this unit and then put all the electronics into the Pi Tin.

 

Step 9

Now your unit is ready, and you can set it up where it will best suit your needs. Once again, don’t worry about figuring out all of the different connecting points on the circuit board. They will be clear once you start to configure your sensor. Your circuit board and sensing equipment might be slightly different than the one presented here but you should still follow the same basic steps for hooking up your homemade sensor device.
